Common Questions from First-Time Visitors

Everything you wanted to know before lighting your first cigar. No judgement. No gatekeeping.

Ask Amir Directly

Cuban cigars use tobacco grown exclusively in Cuba, primarily from the Vuelta Abajo region, and are governed by strict production rules overseen by Habanos S.A. New World cigars are made in countries like Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic, and Honduras, often using Cuban seed tobacco transplanted decades ago. Cuban cigars are prized for their complexity and heritage. New World cigars often deliver bolder, more consistent flavour profiles with distinct construction and terroir character of their own. Both categories have exceptional examples. The right choice depends on the profile and the occasion.

Start mild to medium. A full-strength cigar smoked before your palate has any reference point tends to deliver nicotine ahead of flavour, which is not the experience you want. Amir's standard recommendation for first-time visitors is the Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No.2 or the Romeo y Julieta Churchill. Both are gentle enough to be approachable, complex enough to be interesting. Work up in strength over multiple sessions rather than jumping straight to Bolivar or Partagas.

Vitola is the term for a specific cigar size and shape within a brand's range. It defines the ring gauge (diameter) and length of the cigar. A Robusto, a Churchill, and a Torpedo are all different vitolas. The same brand blended with the same tobaccos will smoke differently across vitolas because the ratio of wrapper to filler changes with diameter, and burn time affects how the flavour develops through the smoke.

A Robusto is short and wide, around 5 inches by 50 ring gauge, smoking for roughly 45 to 60 minutes. It is the most popular format globally because it delivers a concentrated flavour experience in a manageable time frame. A Churchill is longer and narrower, around 7 inches by 47, taking 90 minutes or more and allowing the flavour to evolve through distinct phases. A Torpedo has a tapered, pointed head that concentrates the draw and often produces a slightly richer, more intense character from the first third onwards. For a first visit, a Robusto is the most practical choice.

A cigar has three distinct components. The filler is the interior blend of tobacco leaves, which determines the body, strength, and core flavour. The binder is a single leaf wrapped tightly around the filler to hold it in shape and contribute to combustion. The wrapper is the outermost leaf, often the most expensive component, which influences approximately 30 to 60 percent of the final flavour. A dark, oily wrapper generally indicates a richer, fuller profile. A pale, silky Colorado claro wrapper tends toward creaminess and subtlety.

Price reflects the quality and age of the tobacco, the complexity of the blend, and in the case of Cuban cigars, the cost of legal importation through authorised channels. Aged tobacco is more expensive to produce because it requires years of storage before rolling. Premium wrappers like Ecuadorian Connecticut or Cuban Claro are graded and priced by visual and tactile quality. The 200 THB range covers excellent, well-made cigars from established brands. The 1,500 THB range is for aged Cuban vitolas and limited releases where the tobacco itself carries decades of investment.

Body refers to the weight and intensity of the smoke on the palate, not the flavour complexity. A light-bodied cigar delivers a gentle, airy draw without much physical presence. A full-bodied cigar sits heavy in the mouth and chest, often with significant nicotine. Medium-bodied is the middle ground: you feel the smoke, it has weight and character, but it does not overwhelm. Most first-time visitors find medium-bodied cigars the most satisfying because they provide enough substance to taste what the tobacco is doing without the nicotine overpowering the experience.

All three work well, but the pairing should complement rather than compete. Rum pairs naturally with Cuban cigars because both come from sugar cane-adjacent traditions and the sweetness in aged rum echoes the natural sugars in the tobacco. Single malt Scotch pairs well with fuller-bodied cigars because the peat and wood notes align with the earthy character of the leaf. Coffee is excellent with medium-bodied cigars and helps neutralise tannins between draws. The simplest rule: avoid heavily flavoured or very sweet drinks in the first third of the cigar, when the tobacco flavours are most nuanced.

It depends on the vitola and your draw pace. A Petit Corona takes 20 to 30 minutes. A Robusto runs 45 to 60 minutes. A Churchill or Double Corona can take 90 minutes to two hours. A cigar should be smoked slowly, with a draw roughly every 30 to 60 seconds. Smoking too fast heats the tobacco above its ideal combustion point, generating harsh, bitter compounds that mask the underlying flavour. If the cigar tastes harsh, slow down and rest it in the ashtray between draws.

At CNX Cigars, every Cuban cigar carries official Thai tax documentation issued through the Pacific Cigar Company, the sole authorised Habanos S.A. distributor for the Asia-Pacific region. This is the legal chain of custody that confirms authenticity. Counterfeit Cuban cigars are common in Thailand's tourist markets. Indicators of fakes include loose construction, uneven burn, rough seams, missing or poorly printed band holograms, and pricing well below market rate. If the price seems too good to be true, it almost certainly is.
